Whether you just left the salon with fresh highlights, an all-over color, or a Brazilian Blowout, keeping your hair looking its best between appointments takes a little know-how. At Fleur de Lis Salon in Port Orange, FL, we have been helping clients maintain gorgeous hair for over 25 years — and we want to share our top tips.
1. Switch to Color-Safe Shampoo and Conditioner
This is the single most important thing you can do. Regular shampoos contain harsh sulfates that strip color from your hair with every wash. Color-safe formulas are gentler and help your color last weeks longer. Ask your stylist for a product recommendation at your next visit — we are always happy to point you in the right direction.
2. Wash Your Hair Less Frequently
Fresh color is most vulnerable in the first 48 hours after your appointment. Try to wait at least two days before washing. After that, aim to wash your hair two to three times per week rather than daily. The natural oils your scalp produces actually help condition and protect your color.
3. Use Cool Water When Rinsing
Hot water opens the hair cuticle and allows color molecules to escape. Rinsing with cool or lukewarm water keeps the cuticle sealed so your color stays locked in longer. We know cold showers are not for everyone — but even just a cool final rinse makes a real difference.
4. Protect Your Hair from the Sun
UV rays fade hair color the same way they fade fabrics. If you spend a lot of time outdoors — especially here in Florida — consider using a leave-in conditioner or hair spray with UV protection. Wearing a hat on particularly sunny days is also a great habit.
5. Deep Condition Weekly
Colored hair tends to be drier than uncolored hair. A weekly deep conditioning treatment helps restore moisture, improves elasticity, and makes your color appear more vibrant. Many of our clients use an at-home hair mask once a week between appointments with excellent results.
6. Avoid Chlorine and Salt Water Without Protection
Chlorine from pools and salt from the ocean can both alter and strip hair color. Before swimming, apply a protective leave-in conditioner or hair oil to act as a barrier. Rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water immediately after swimming.
7. Use Heat Protectant Every Time You Style
Blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands all break down hair color over time. A good heat protectant spray creates a shield between your hair and the heat source. Apply it whenever you plan to use any hot styling tools.
Ready for a Refresh?
Even with perfect maintenance, hair color needs professional attention to stay at its best. Most color services benefit from a touch-up every four to eight weeks depending on your style and how fast your hair grows.
